Springtime is here and the weather is warm. That means it’s time to trade in your sweaters for shorts and sandals. On top of the beautiful weather, one of the best parts of the spring is all the traditional events that happen during that time of year. If you’re planning to attend a formal event during spring of 2016, try out one of these great formal hairstyle ideas below.

The Princess Twist

The princess twist is a low, elegant hairstyle that gets the hair off your neck in hot weather, but is also easy to do. To put your hair in a princess twist, follow these steps:

  1. Brush your dry hair, then grasp the ends of your hair and slowly roll it up towards the nape of your neck.
  2. Once your hair is in a roll, use bobby pins to secure it tightly.
  3. Finish the look with hairspray to keep it looking good while you dance the night away.

The Straight Ponytail

Wearing a ponytail is a classically feminine — but comfortable — look. Dress your pony up this spring by straightening your hair first.

  1. Using a flat iron, straighten all of your dry hair.
  2. Gather all your hair together, then secure in an elastic right at the nape of your neck.
  3. Pull the elastic down to make it a bit looser.

The Milkmaid

Braids are an excellent way to create an interesting, textural look in your hair — and they also stay secure throughout a busy night. This Milkmaid hairstyle is a hot look for anyone who wants their hair up and out of their face.

  1. Use a brush to part your hair down the middle.
  2. Take one side of your hair and create a braid. Secure that braid with an elastic.
  3. Repeat with the other side of your hair.
  4. Then, take one braid in your hand and fold it up to the center of your head. Secure the end of it there with a bobby pin or two.
  5. Repeat with the other braid.

Flowing Curls

Sometimes, you just want to let your hair flow at a fancy event. This hot look creates a fancy aesthetic with curls, but allows you to keep your hair down at your shoulders.

  1. Create a deep part on one side of your head.
  2. Flat iron your hair from the top of the part down to the ends.
  3. Use a 1-inch curling iron to add in curls throughout the bottom half of your locks. You can use a heat setting spray to make sure the curls hold.
  4. Top off with a spritz of hairspray to keep the curls secure all night, then add some shine spray to make sure your hair looks smooth and healthy.

The Casual Half Up

This look is a great prom style for someone who wants a compromise between an up-do and down-do.

  1. Create a center part in your hair.
  2. Pull the front strands of your hair forward around your face.
  3. Gather the hair that hangs above your ear on one side of your head. Then repeat on the other side of the head.
  4. Pull the two sections of hair together and secure them loosely with a clear elastic at the center of the back of your head.
  5. Use a curling iron to curl the loose pieces of hair on either side of your face.
  6. Add a decorative pin over the elastic to dress up the look even more.
