alopeciaAlopecia is an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss and affects 6.5 million Americans. While most people who get, alopecia are under the age of thirty, anyone can develop this disorder.

People with alopecia typically begin to lose their hair in clumps, however, as in the case of Gianessa Wride, hair loss on the scalp and other areas of the body can occur rapidly.

Gianessa is seven years old and lost all her hair in less than a month, according to her mother, who is a nurse. Her mother has been proactive in helping Gianessa embrace ways to battle alopecia and her latest effort has gone viral.

Gianessa’s mom decorated her scalp with beautiful jeweled stickers for “Crazy Hair Day” at school and not only did Gianessa win the contest, but her viral pictures have inspired others with her condition.

According to Gianessa’s mom, “I cannot count [all] the people who messaged me pictures of their own kids with alopecia. [Gianessa] inspired them so much to just embrace themselves and love themselves. I hope people get a lot of positivity from this and know you are beautiful no matter what you look like and what you are going through.”

If you or someone you love suffers from alopecia, here are five ways to embrace the battle.

  1. Join or Create an Alopecia Support Group

Do an online search for an alopecia support group in your area. If one doesn’t exit, you can start one.

  1. Don’t Let Other People Determine Your Worth

Letting what others think about alopecia and your hair loss determine how you feel about yourself doesn’t work. In fact, the sooner you can measure your own self-worth by your own thoughts and actions rather than by the amount of hair you have and what others think, the happier you will be.

  1. Don’t Let Alopecia Stop You

Hair doesn’t have anything to do with your talents. If you’re a gifted writer, then write. If you are a fast runner, then run. If you love public speaking, then get out there and speak.

  1. Consider Hair Replacement

For men, women, and children hair replacement is an option to help battle hair loss from alopecia. There are several proven, customized, non-surgical hair restoration solutions available today.

  1. Have Fun with Wigs

Wigs come in so many styles, lengths and colors, that you can wear a different one every day of the week or even month! You can choose a wig to wear according to your mood or the occasion, such as a flouncy blonde wig for a fun day with friends or a short, dark bob for a romantic dinner with your significant other.

These are some fun and encouraging ways to help women deal with alopecia, but at Genesis II we know that wigs have a bad reputation. Our highest quality medical wigs give women the confidence to socialize with family and friends, and carry on their professional lives while maintaining as much privacy about their hair loss condition or treatments as they wish.
