In 2015, wigs took the red carpet by storm, and in 2016 the trend shows no signs of stopping. Reality star and trendsetter Kylie Jenner says she’s responsible: “I started wigs, and now everyone is wearing wigs. Kim [Kardashian] just used my wig guy last night…I just do whatever I want to do, and people will follow,” she recently told Marie Claire. Although wigs have been worn since the days of Cleopatra, they became immensely popular after Jenner began sharing her love of them with her 50 million-plus Instagram followers. How does her big sister Kendall feel about this? Not so great.

Model Kendall Jenner is notoriously low-maintenance in her down time. Paparazzi frequently catch her running around New York, LA, and Paris with nails un-manicured and her hair swept into a messy ponytail. She saves her transformations for the runway and that means only one thing: wigs. Jenner was asked to wear a wig in 2014 when Marc Jacobs featured them in his spring collection, and she wore one again for Chanel in 2015. This year, wigs have become a staple of high fashion runways. During Balmain’s Fall 2016 show, every model was asked to don a wig, transforming Kendall Jenner from a tall, leggy brunette to a tall, leggy blonde.

Always a professional, Jenner strutted the runway like the pro she is… but she didn’t like it. After the Balmain show, the laid back stunner posted on her website: “Those wigs are SO uncomfortable, though. (I don’t understand how Kylie does it!).”
Did Kylie’s love of wigs change what Kendall was being asked to wear on the runway? This is something of a chicken-or-egg problem. Kylie Jenner regularly attends runway fashion shows, so her love of wigs may be inspired by designers like Marc Jacobs, but was it Jacobs or Jenner who inspired Balmain? Kylie’s social media game gives her wider reach than most high-end designers, and more often than not, designers are influenced by celebrity style trends.

Kylie may not have created the wig, but if she wants to take credit for its sudden surge in popularity, it would be difficult to refute. Rihanna, Sia, and even Beyoncé have been wearing wigs for years, but until Kylie gave them her stamp of approval, they weren’t permeating every day consciousness in the way that they are now. This leaves Kendall Jenner on a very itchy runway.
