poolsideYou’ve spent a lot of time and effort getting your look just right for summer. The last thing you want is to damage your summer blonde with chlorine from the pool. Learn how to avoid color damage and still enjoy your time swimming.

Keeping Safe With Chlorine

The chlorine used in swimming pools has a legitimate purpose: to kill bacteria like E. coli so you don’t get ill. An unfortunate side effect to this precaution, though, is a chemical reaction with your hair dye. This reaction can pull needed moisture from your hair, deprive it of nutrients and even turn your hair green.

Going Green Not Required

Lighter shades of hair dye and especially blondes are the most susceptible to hair damage because the dye has already stripped your hair of its natural color rather than adding color to it. But you don’t have to ditch your beautiful blonde hair just because you enjoy swimming in a pool. There are multiple ways to protect your hair and still have fun poolside.

Coating Your Hair

One way to keep your hair from absorbing the chlorine is to coat the strands with oil. The oil lets the chlorine slip off the hair so it doesn’t adhere and react with the chemicals in the hair color. Silicone-based hair products designed to protect from the heat of styling work well for coating hair. You can also opt for natural oils like coconut or canola to replenish nutrients while warding off reactions.

Fighting Water With Water

Because your hair acts like a sponge, you can avoid hair damage by rinsing your hair before you jump into the pool. Because it’s already saturated, any further absorption of the pool water is minimal. Likewise, rinsing immediately after exiting the pool will remove any chlorine that did try to adhere. For an extra lift, try diluting one part apple cider vinegar to four parts water for a natural and effective rinse.

Covering Up

If you swim in a pool on a regular basis, you might want to consider wearing a swim cap to avoid chemical buildup. Wet hair before you put the cap on and make sure to tuck in stray strands of hair.

With these helpful solutions, you can keep your summer blonde no matter how much you swim in the pool. Jump into waves of fun without worry about dull and damaged hair.
