ChlorineAs the days get warmer, the swimming pool becomes more popular. Chlorine can damage hair, so keeping it conditioned as well as protecting it from damaging effects is vital. Follow these helpful tips to keep your hair looking good and protected from chlorine effects.

Shower Before Swimming

If there is a shower at the pool, then soak your hair before going for a swim. This may sound counterproductive, but hair is porous. By soaking your hair with fresh water before swimming, it will already be full of liquid. This makes it harder for chlorinated water to get into your hair follicles and damage the shaft. If there isn’t a shower available, take a travel-sized container of water with you to pour over your hair before jumping into the pool. Running a little Moroccan argan oil or olive oil through wet hair before swimming helps waterproof and protect it from damage.

Wear a Cap

A swimming cap protects hair from metal properties in chlorinated water and will keep it dry as you swim. You can also apply a deep conditioner to your hair before putting the cap on to provide even more protection. Another way to give your hair some protection is to tie it up before swimming or to wear a scarf. If you are swimming outdoors, think about using UV protection hair spray, which helps block the harmful rays of the sun.

Rinse Your Hair

Once you have left the pool, don’t forget to rinse your hair in fresh water. This will help avoid a residual build-up of chemicals in it and help protect it from damage.

Care for Your Hair

Once you are out of the pool, give your hair two deep shampoos to rinse any chemicals out. Use an anti-chlorine shampoo if you have dry or brittle hair, and for colored hair apply, a color-saving shampoo. It is important to rinse for longer than usual to get rid of any residual chemicals. Using a deep conditioning hair mask is a great way to treat your hair after a swim as well. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes, but if you are pressed for time, go for a quick rinse conditioner. Use these tips to help you make the most of your summer in the pool and keep your hair in top condition.
